Faces, Places…
I scribble and doodle interesting people I see, then bring the characters to life through painting. The goal is to paint as many interesting faces as I can until I’m so stretched out of my comfort zone I am no longer intimidated by making people into art.
Maybe you’ll find a character of yourself here some day?
The inspiration for this project is taken from daily people watching in my local haunts and around the world.
"Jacob" Abode Bar - Leith, Scotland . On first impression, Jacob may seem a bit quiet or shy, but if you get him talking about Wes Anderson films you’ll find he can be quite emphatic. His favourite meal is a full Scottish breakfast, but mainly for the tattie scone and black pudding. When asked what he does for a living he’ll generally reply that he’s “between things at the moment”, but this response never changes. He only smokes when he’s pondering something important.
''Aubrey'' The False Widow. Edinburgh, Scotland. . Where there is a creepy old kirkyard, there is often an Aubrey. Aubrey is 27, owns two pet tortoises named Rick and Flair, and loves Monster energy drinks. She spends her weekends driving her beat up Fiat her older sister handed down to her to various known ghosting spots around Scotland, and brings charcoal with her to make gravestone rubbings. She also brings seeds to give to the local crows, who are respectful to her and any friends she brings along for the afternoon.
"Jean-Luc". La Fleur en Papier Doré. Brussels, Belgium. . Voici Marcel. Marcel is in his late twenties and has lived in Belgium for 10 years. He is originally from Leeds. He is an avid theatre-goer and has a blog dedicated to analysing and reviewing films made during the Golden Age of cinema. He works on this in the evenings when he returns to his studio flat after his 9 to 5. His blog has 26 followers.
"Claudette" La Fleur en Papier Doré. Brussels, Belgium. . This is Claudette. She is a 23 year old student just starting her Master of Arts in Art History and Philosophy. She is an avid reader, and it occupies most of her time but sneaks a break here and there for a cheeky cig and wine at her local bar. She prefers the company of her cat, Artemis, and has no desire for a dating life right now as men in books are better.
"Jordan" Word of Mouth Cafe - Edinburgh . Some people are morning people. Jordan is not. This can mostly be attributed to late nights in craft beer bars, or night owl spurts rewatching episodes of the Office. She arrived as an expat from Seattle over 7 years ago and works in corporate finance. Her regular cafe order is a dry cappuccino, loves country music, and owns a Manchester Terrier named Waffles. Her dream is to quit her job and open a small bakery on an island in the Hebrides, but she’ll need to learn to stop hitting the snooze button before that happens.
"Iain" Bomber Brewing - Vancouver, Canada . Two kids under 5, and owning a small local produce business, means Ian has his hands pretty full these days. He enjoys getting outside and hiking the PNW, because it means he gets a little alone time every so often. After recently turning 40 he was encouraged by his wife to expand his hobbies a bit beyond work and family, so he started a band with a few of his dad friends. They’re called Picnic Basket, and they only play 90’s covers.
